October 19, 2011

The purpose of this readme.txt file is to explain the contents of this zipped file, and to explain how to use CML 2/4FSK + RF evaluation boards.

************ GENERAL INFORMATION *********************
Using the information provided in this zipped file, the user will be able to exchange 9600baud 4FSK Block 2 Formatted data using RF signaling with CML evaluation boards and perform Bit Error Rate Tests.

The zipped file contains the following files:
- FI-2x_RF_Automatic_Rx_Formatted_DataBurst.pes
- FI-2x_RF_Automatic_Tx_Formatted_DataBurst.pes

All of these files should be stored in the same folder on the user's PC.

The following CML evaluation boards are required to perform this testing:
- 2x PE0002

******* CONNECTIONS **************
The following connections should be made to the Tx and Rx platforms. Do not apply power or signals yet:
See the YouTube Video of "QAM RF Demo with 2 PE0002 Hosts" to help with the following evaluation board setups
Note the YouTube demonstration is for QAM however the Evaluation board connections are the same.

BASEBAND TX:
1. Connect Tx PE0601-7164 I_OUT to EV9980 TXI-.
2. Connect Tx PE0601-7164 Q_OUT to EV9980 TXQ-
***NB: Ensure jumpers are installed on Tx PE0601-7164 TX I/Q header pins 1:2, 3:4, 7:8, and 9:10.

BASEBAND RX:
The receive signal connection from EV9920B to PE0601-7164 must employ the differential PE0601-7164 Rx signal interface. The single-ended PE0601-7164 Rx signal interface should not be used.
1. Construct a 10 conductor ribbon cable, approximately 8 in length.
2. Remove jumpers from Rx PE0601-7164 RX I/Q J24 port.
3. Using the ribbon cable, connect Rx PE0601-7164 RX I/Q J24 port to EV9920B RX I/Q J20 port.
***NB: Using a straight ribbon cable inverts Q channel polarity between the EV9920B and PE0601-7164. This causes RF modulation frequency inversion, which can be easily mitigated in one of two ways:
	(1) Use RF LO high-side injection. (This technique is used in this document.)
	(2) Invert the Q signal polarity in the Rx CMX7164. This can be done by writing a negative value for the Rx CMX7164 Fine Input gain in the I/Q Input Control register ($5F/$60).
4. Remove jumpers from EV9920B RXIF J4 port.

RF TX:
1. Connect RF signal generator #1 to EV9980 LO-IN J1 SMA connector. (This will serve as the 900MHz LO for the CMX998, which is the Tx RF modulator.)
2. Connect EV9980 TX-OUT 400MHZ J9 SMA connector to an external 50ohm RF attenuator.
***NB: 30dB of external RF attenuation was used in the development of this document. Using a different amount of RF attenuation may require the adjustment of various parameters. Please contact CML Technical Support if you require assistance.
3. Connect the RF attenuator output to a RF splitter.
4. Connect one RF splitter output to the spectrum analyzer.
5. Connect the other RF splitter output to EV9920B RX_IN_1 J9 SMA connector.

RF RX:
1. Connect RF signal generator #2 to EV9920B RX_LO J6 SMA connector.

POWER TX:
1. Connect +5VDC unregulated supply to Tx PE0002 J8.
2. Connect 5VDC unregulated supply to Tx PE0601-7164 J16 0V and -V connections. (This is used for the PE0601-7164 instrumentation interface that converts the CMX7164 devices Tx differential signals to single-ended signals at the PE0601-7164 SMA connectors.)
3. Connect 7.2VDC unregulated supply (1A rating) to EV9980 +V and GND plugs of POWER J10 connector.
4. Connect 3.6VDC unregulated supply (2A rating) to EV9980 +V_PA (+V_PA is the middle plug for J10) and GND plugs of POWER J10 connector.

POWER RX:
1. Connect +5VDC unregulated supply to Rx PE0002 J8.
2. Connect 7.2VDC unregulated supply (1A rating) to EV9920B J16 connector.

OTHER CONNECTIONS:
1. Connect Tx PE0601-7164 J13:2 to EV9980 J12:15 to allow PA rampup/down by CMX7164.
***NB: When the EV9980 is turned so that J12 is in the bottom-left corner of the board, pin 1 of this connector is the uppermost right pin. The left column of pins are all tied to GND.
2. Connect Tx PE0601-7164 J13:5 to EV9980 TL14 to allow automatic CMX998 I/Q input DC calibration by CMX7164.

************ TESTS *********************
- Using Rx PE0002 GUI, click "Select Script" and find "FI-2x_RF_Automatic_Rx_Formatted_DataBurst.pes". Click "Run" and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Using Tx PE0002 GUI, click "Select Script" and find "FI-2x_RF_Automatic_Tx_Formatted_DataBurst.pes". Click "Run and follow the on-screen prompts.
- Both PE0002 GUIs generate messages to inform the user of the progress through the data transfer.
- When data transfer is complete, the user can view the received data in the "FI-2x_rdata.txt" file.

************* USEFUL NOTES ******************
- These files were developed and tested with 2/4FSK Function Image 7164-2.0.0.3.h. Operation with other Function Images may be possible. Please contact CML Applications Support for assistance with other Function Images.
- Script files can be modified with any text editor.
- x7164 is configured for 9600baud using standard PE0601-7164 19.2MHz xtal. Please contact CML Applications Support for assistance with other baud rates.
- Tx platform uses 60dB of external RF attenuation.
- Tx script performs PA ramping with x7164 RAMDAC. The RAMDAC values are scaled from the default datasheet values to achieve the 1.2V needed for the EV9980 RF PA. In order for this to work, Tx PE0601-7164 J13:2 must be connected to EV9980 J12:15.
- Tx Data script performs x998 IQ DC calibration. In order for that to work, Tx PE0601-7164 J13:5 must be connected to EV9980 TL14. (NB, there is a misalignment between PE0601 schematic and x7164 pinout.)
